BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — On Monday, Boise mayor candidate Mike Masterson released his housing plan.
According to a recent news release, the city's current approach is "to pretend that upzoning can solve this challenge, but we cannot upzone ourselves tens of thousands of new housing units. Instead, people are forced to move to our neighboring cities and commute, increasing congestion and using Boise services without contributing to the Boise tax base.
Masterson says he will do everything in his power as mayor to address housing needs by following the guidelines below:
- Build more smart-planned communities like Harris Ranch and Bown Crossing.
- Establish a Housing Alliance.
- Work with builders, developers, commercial property owners and neighbors to find vacant commercial property that can be repurposed into housing.
- Institute an executive steering committee to expedite the review of the new zoning law and revise the code no later than July 1, 2024.
- Bring together a committee to examine our existing city planning and permitting.
